there are some parts that are too slow, probably because i should have become more familiar with the speech, it was also a little short, and the eye contact was poor probably due to the computer being so low in relation to me standing. but the upside to the speech is that it is a good relevant topic with good diction and volume

looking back on the last time you had a meal with a group of people, how many of the others actually finished everything on their plate, or how many times do you go to clear your plate in the dinning hall and see other plates there filled with uneaten food, maybe you wonder what happens with the uneaten food at eating establishments, the answer is they get put in a dumpster, 30-40% of food in America goes to waste, so that would be like filling a plate with food and just throwing away a large portion of it every time you ate. While all this food is going to waste there are 48.1 million households in the United States that are food insecure, which means that those household do not know where their next meal is coming from, now this is not an unsolvable thing, by reducing the food wastage by only 15 percent would be enough to feed 25 million Americans. Not only is this a burden on those who are less fortunate but also on those who have food but also on those who handle it and every involvement in between, 218 billion dollars a year is put into food that is ultimately put to waste, that is 52 tons of food put into a landfill every year, and an additional 10 tons that is discarded or left unharvested at farms, this all starts with being responsible, the majority of the waste coming from households, with approximately 144 billion dollars worth of food going to waste from houses alone. There are small simple things that can be done to reduce the waste in your household, and that begins with being realistic with what you'll eat and what you won't when you go shopping at the grocery store, recognize food you don't regularly finish or even eat at all and be responsible when shopping. Also 70% of refrigerators are set at too high of a temperature, which leads to premature expiration of food, you're refrigerator should be a few degrees above freezing point for optimal food preservation and minimized food waste. More than 50% of household say they threw away food because they cooked too much, a solution for that is to use your leftovers for upcoming meals, as well as many efforts across the country to donate your extra food. Now there are many many more methods and examples of reducing your food waste, but what it all comes down to is being responsible and conscious of what you are doing, wasted food will not be reduced without the effort being put in to help reduce. So next time your out getting food, take a moment and think about what you really need.

eflection on debate unit due on blogs by midnght Monday -- think about what you leanred (terms and strategy), how you did, how you improved throughout this unit (including 1st mini debates, 2 formal team debates, last mini debates.) 400 words
strategies i learned are to be patient and calm during a debate, also to really pay attention to the opposing argument so you are able to counter their comments and build off of what they say. also i learned that putting research and implementing facts can be extremely important to winning your argument with the additional facts. I think at some times i did well but other times there was plenty of room for improvement such as planning my counter argument with ethos, pathos, and logos mostly where facts and perhaps denoting the others comments, no necessarily just to denote but when they have a false comment or an irrelevant one it can be beneficial to exploit to show you are paying attention to them and that you know your stuff. when i came to the mini debates it was tough because the topic was given on the spot so it was tough to mentally prepare and also to gather facts you can implement in your argument

MLDA 21 helps prevent underage binge drinking.
Binge drinking peaks among 21- to 25-year-olds at 45.9%, while the binge drinking rates of those aged 12-13, 14-15, 16-17, and 18-20 are 1.5%, 7.8%, 19.4%, and 35.7% respectively.
Lowering MLDA 21 would give high schoolers and even middle schoolers easier access to alcohol.
Newly-legal drinkers often purchase alcohol for their underage peers, creating a "trickle-down" effect. [34] Surveys show that the most common source of alcohol among 18- to 20-year olds is their 21- to 24-year-old peers. [35]
Lowering the drinking age will invite more use of illicit drugs among 18-21 year olds.
A peer-reviewed study from the Journal of Studies of Alcohol and Drugs found that the younger a person begins to drink alcohol the more likely it is that they will use other illicit drugs. [38] Lowering MLDA 21 would increase the number of teens who drink and therefore the number of teens who use other drugs. [37] [39]

Reflection due -- 300 words. How has your TED talk improved from your last draft? How could it have been improved further with more time/effort on this project?
The only improvement was the added statistics which could have been put in more appropriate points in the talk but due to lack of time it was crammed at the end, had there been more time an effort in the project the would have been tremendous upside, not only with the basic speaking actions like tone speed and diction, but with the setting could have been more formal to the situation where i could have been standing and addressing a cameral further away to simulate an audience, i could have taken more time to get a better grasp of i movie which could have helped me incorporate images and beneficial evidence and facts to my talk
Thursday, March 9, 2017
I feel that the presentation could have been improved, and that goes along with the atmosphere as well as delivery. the diction was good, but expression was lacking, it was relatively monotone. The talk could have used more facts to back it up, as well as maybe a story or something more engaging than the reference to youth soccer.

So many people growing up play a recreational sport and and it may carry over to high school which come college their athletic career is over in most cases, and this applies to music, and even academics, this is because many people are born into families with the goal to have their child do something that they have experienced or know about with the percentages of that working out are very slim, and this being said I'm am not trying to turn you away from doing large market activities, because that is what keeps the areas competitive, but if more parents were to instill a young passions for not as commonly aspired for areas like kicking in football, french horn, oboe, or college majors like mythology and latin then those areas would be desirable and more competitive and more like a sport like soccer and football, an instrument like the guitar, or a major like a business, though these fields would have a gradual increase in popularity and competitiveness. Early on it would be

I plan on writing about how parents should try to get their children into a not
regularly aspired for activity, so they could be successful in it if they were to show any promise towards it at a young age, examples of this would be when they sign them up for football, instead of them trying quarter back or running back, they begin as a kicker, not only would they have a great step on other kids as they get into high school, but in the case of this for football, the injury likelihood is significantly lesser than most other positions in the sport, but this doesn't only apply to athletics, it can be in music for an instrument not as popular to the common public, and anything else that can be thought of in a parents point of view, with parents starting children young with things that most kids who are older resort to as back up plans it will give them tremendous potential to thrive at whatever their specialty is which will open doors for them in life and help them be successful

A good simple and relatable topic that everyone can have a sense for, and besides it being a topic that is connectable to virtually anyone it was also delivered well with engaging expression and tone, and an additional factor that helped it was adding statistics to give a number to the faces which she had opted the talk with to gives a personal sense to it.

An interesting concept but not a reasonable one to get others on board with or connect with, gives off an uncomfortable vibe which can turn off an audience and also her example outfits are a little outside of the box which it significantly different to the average person listening, in some senses the whole thing can be viewed as if she is crazy, with the topic she is getting across and they way she is getting it across

Reflect on your second speech -- what did you improve on from the first one? what do you still need to work on? what did you notice in watching your peers for what makes a speech good/strong/engaging or not. 300 words. Post on your blog.
I believe that my eye contact improved from the first speech but still could get better, also there are some parts where my vocal expression improved but still needs to be improved because the majority of the speech was monotone, i feel that my posture was good an confident but that wasn't fully shown in the delivery of my speech, though the diction and projection were good, i need to learn the speech better so there are no more odd pauses for finding my place. Something i noticed about my peers was that they new their speech better than i did, some needed more eye contact but overall their were easy to understand and were able to engage me with their content and tone.

wish; to feel or express a strong desire or hope for something that is not easily attainable; want something that cannot or probably will not happen. So with this being said, if i could wish for one thing right now, it would to be rich beyond belief, so that i could buy anything and everything and still be richer than anyone, pay off the united states debt and still be richer than anyone, now those wouldn’t be the reasons why, the reason i would want to be rich is to live in a nice normal house with all my close friends by a lake or any body of water in the middle of now where, not a neighbor in site just peace, quiet, my friends, and my dog. Waking up everyday with no worries on my mind, never worrying about bills, or responsibility. Hang around every day and just enjoy the day, not having to worry about a job or anything really, if I ever got bored id have the money to pay for anything my friends and i would desire, whether it be a trip to anywhere imaginable for any time imaginable, or it be just moving to the city for a different lifestyle. The main reason the money would be nice would be because it would give me freedom to do mostly anything anyone could imagine.

Blog 2 due: What makes a good speech? (Consider text as well as delivery.) Also, watch the video of your own first speech and discuss how well you performed. What did you do well and what do you need to work on more for next time? 450-550 words.
A good speech consists of not only proper delivery with strong diction so the listeners can understand you, adequate projection so all of the listeners can hear you, confident body language so the listeners are more engaged with a confident speaker, and proper emphasis on words so the speech isn't monotone and keeps the listener from being bored; but the context, it should have convicting detail that keeps listeners engaged and to think deeper about the point you are getting across gets your point across. In some cases turning it on a lighter side would be good to capture the listeners attention in a way. In my speech something i did well was projection and diction, i feel that it was easy to understand and hear what i was saying for the size of the room and crowd. The things that i need to focus on and work on would be to learn my speech, by reading it over in my head a aloud so when i take my eyes off the speech to engage the audience i am able to know where i am when i get back to my speech, which leads me into the next area that needs improvement, which would be engaging the audience, through eye contact which needed work by potentially engaging each audience member for a few seconds but in a sense is hard with a small audience because of the sense of intimacy with a small room and minimal audience, but the is definitely room for improvement. third thing that needs to be improved is the tone and emphasis used, which primarily was monotone, I would need to emphasize words periodically to keep the speech from sounding boring. I would also would have liked to have a longer speech with a more engaging format within it so the audience would be drawn in to a sort of story, not so much someone listing off events; which was somewhat done throughout. The final thing I observed was that there is improvement to be made towards my body language by being more comfortable and engaged with the audience whether that be through keeping my body still or keeping my hands by my side. with the improvement of these things it would be greatly beneficial to my speaking to crowds of people.

Just over ten years ago was the first time I had ever skated, It was a Friday night open skate at the local rink after my friends birthday party,
i had never worn a pair of skates before, i sat down and my mom tied my skates for me. I remember my friends skating laps around me, and despite not being good, there was something about it that hooked me.
a few short weeks after I began learn to skate and soon enough after I was playing on an organized team.
I just couldn't get enough, it was all I wanted to do, when winter would come around I couldn't wait for ponds to freeze so i could go out and play until it was too dark.
I had no idea it would spark into something that influences the majority of the decisions made in my life,
whether that be what time I wake up, what I eat for a meal, or what it is I watch on tv...
eventually it progressed to the point I am at right now with being with my team everyday of the week and living with them at school.
Everyday that goes by I am grateful for the past ten years of travel, friends, and experiences I have gained and would would not have asked for a different way of spending the past years of my life.

Who are you & why are you taking this class? Introduce yourself, & tell 3 things about yourself (include 3 photos, 1 for each item). Then explain why you're here & set 3 specific course goals for yourself. 450-550 words.
I am Nathan Altman if I am answering the question literally, and answering in a figurative sense I would say I am just an everyday person who enjoys life and my friends and also a hockey player. The reason I am taking this class is because it not only sounded fun when I was choosing my courses but it was something I knew I was going into not knowing what to expect. So i am from Scituate Rhode Island and I've been playing hockey since I was seven years old, the first time I had skated I was at a good friends birthday party and from that day on I loved it, I don't think I could pinpoint what it was that hooked me at the time, but looking back at it at this point in my life I believe it is that I wanted to get better because with almost everything I do in my life I want to be good at it no matter how small or irrelevant it be. Three things about myself, well, one would be that I love hockey and have had the same love for it ever since I first started and I hope to have the same passion towards it for the rest of my life.

The second thing about me would be that I have a four year old yellow lab named Beau and that when I'm away from home he is the thing I miss the most, and that when i'm home I try to be with him as much as possible.
And the third thing would be that my favorite thing to do in the summer is go to the beach with all my friends and just sit there until the sun goes down.
The reason I came here is to play hockey and to improve my grades by repeating my junior year, because my first three years of high school my grades were far from impressive, and improving my grades was one of my goals coming into cheshire, and though they have improved dramatically there is still room for improvement. The second goal was to become a better hockey player as the year progressed which I believe has happened, which is also something that has room for improvement. The final Goal of mine which I try to carry in my life with everything I take part in is to learn something every opportunity, whether it be something to give me an academic advantage such as a studying strategy, it be a piece of advice that I can carry with me for the rest of my life, or it be something I lean on the ice from a coach or and experience that happened.
